Barry and Karin's Story

Barry and Karin Holman were traveling on HWY 20 on November 23 when they were hit head on by someone traveling the wrong way. Both were taken to EIRMC where they were in critical condition. Both suffered extensive injuries - Barry had serious chest trauma, six broken ribs, a lacerated liver, a shattered heal on one foot and a shattered ankle on the other. Karin suffered head trauma, a broken wrist, a compound femur break, a broken pelvis, a broken knee and a broken ankle. To date Karin has has five surgeries and Barry has undergone three. There is a possibility there will be more for both of them.

Karin and Barry have nine children ranging in age from 7 to 17. They are two of the kindest, most loving people we know, both serving everyone they know. They will both  be in wheelchairs for at least 3 months and be in rehabilitation learning to walk and use their legs again for the many months to follow.

On Thursday December 15, there will be a fundraiser dinner at Sugar Salem High School from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The cost is $7 a person or $30 per family. There will be a silent auction with all proceeds going to help Karin and Barry.

This picture was taken when Barry and Karin were able to see eachother for the first time since the accident. This is what Barrys sister had to say " Many, many things to be grateful for this wonderful Thanksgiving morning! Two that are very fresh on my mind are the amazing examples in my life. One in particular is my amazing sister-in-law, Karin Brown Holman, when faced with excruciating pain that could not be toppled, she never strayed from her ever so positive attitude. She never stopped being her grateful self, thanking the nurse for every small thing she could do and always expressing the things she was grateful for in this trial. I am so blessed to have and still have her in my life! What an example! The other blessing I am very grateful this day is the tender mercies of God. I was blessed to see many yesterday. One was when they wheeled my brother back from his second surgery of the day and the nurses wheeled him into his sweet wife's room so they could finally see one another and ease that unknown. How tender that was to see and experience the love they have for one another! I, myself, and my family are so blessed this weekend!"
